I had a first generation one of these and it was very useful. I am a rn but never used it in work just on my kids when they had suspected ear infections. I did a trip to Malawi and was screening a bunch of kids and it came in very handy so I left it with one of the local nurses. When I got back I wanted to replace it and found that I was four generations behind.
Like I said the basic one is fine but this one is much better. Firstly it is heavier which may not sound like an advantage but it makes it easier to handle for small adjustments. The handle is wider for better grip and the lense is much larger for easier visualization. They build quality seems very high and it performs as well as any otoscope I have used, the LED is bright and even my 7 year old was able to visualize my ear drum quickly with it.
The only change I would make would be to dim the LED to check pupil reflex, it’s a bit bright for that. However it was not designed for that so I can’t say that it let me down.
If you want to just occasionally check your kids ears for infection then the original one will be fine, but if you spend the extra and get this you will have an easier time, particularly if you are not used to using an otoscope. This one however will work well for home use but is also cheap and tough and effective so if you take it out into the field or practice you can use it without having to worry about it but also not care if you leave it or give it to someone.
I feel the same about stethoscopes, they have to do the job well, for as long as posssible but you shouldn’t panic if you find out you have lost it because it cost so much.
All in all a great tool.

Have tried lots of otoscopes through the years. This is well made, sturdy and compact with good material selection. Dr mom has a sense for good quality.

Really pleased with this. Works perfectly, great quality and even comes with a battery so you’re ready to use it right away. Wasn’t sure if my 8 m/o boy was just teething or had an ear infection as he doesn’t have a fever, just all the archetypal teething symptoms plus tugging on/itching his ear. Turns out he has a bit of wax build up (but no infection!) which we can now address. Great reassurance for worried first time parents, ear infections are so common in the early years and even though I didn’t think he had one I was still worried I could be missing something!

I’m a physician and new mom and wanted an otoscope to be able to check baby’s ears without having to take him into the clinic. Obvioulsy not the same quality as the Welch Allyn in the office, but pretty dang good and super easy to use. Even comes with a reference chart for those not used to looking in ears. My non-physician husband was able to get a good view of my ear the other day when I had a concern. And my 16 month old is so used to having his ears examined now that he’s a superstar patient for his well child checks which is just an added bonus.

Brilliant piece of equipment as a retired State Registered Nurse, I feel my review is worthy as the otoscope I used in the NHS was bigger & heavier. This lightweight alternative is a pleasure to use.

I previously purchased the Dr. Mom Otoscope and it has been a remarkably useful tool for home healthcare. As a parent, having the ability to check my children’s ears for infections or other issues has provided immense peace of mind. The otoscope itself is excellent in quality. The light is bright and clear, providing a very good view of the ear canal and eardrum. This has been instrumental in helping us decide when a visit to the doctor is necessary.
One of the standout features of this otoscope is its user-friendly design. It’s simple enough for any person to use, yet provides professional-grade visibility. This balance of simplicity and effectiveness is what makes it a valuable tool for any family.
While the otoscope is great, it’s worth noting that the case it comes in does feel a bit cheap, as it’s made of a lighter plastic. However, this is a minor issue compared to the overall functionality and reliability of the otoscope itself. The case is still functional and protects the instrument, which is the most important aspect.
In summary, the Dr. Mom Otoscope is a fantastic investment for families. It’s affordable, easy to use, and provides the kind of insight into your family’s health that can save unnecessary trips to the doctor. Despite the case being a bit on the cheaper side, the quality and performance of the otoscope itself more than make up for it. I highly recommend it to anyone in need of a reliable home otoscope.

Have had this a while now and I’m very impressed with it. You can see really clearly in the ear canal, I use it whilst doing an ear irrigation

Works as intended. Great to have when I thought my son ( 2 years old) had an ear infection instead of guessing what was causing him discomfort. 10/10 recommend.

Very good. Cheaper and does the job just as good as the expensive brands.

I bought a cheap otoscope before but it wasn’t good so I wasn’t sure whether I should go for another budget one, I took the risk but it was well worth it. This otoscope is light weight and uses LED light which is quite bright, I compared it to high end Welch Alynn otoscope my colleague had and in my experience the LED light provides comparable if not better visualisation of the eardrum and doesn’t need replacement like a normal light bulb. The lens is also great and provides good magnification. There is also an option of attaching a Welch Alynn nosecone if you’re using their specula but you need to request/buy it separately from the company. All in all, I think it does a fantastic job for the little price it costs.
